The 'Seeway Trust Ukraine'
Elena Kulakova oversees a Seeway supported feeding programme in the Ukraine.

This time Tammy Swailes a close friend of Paster Elena Kulakova wrote, to explain that Elena's husband has recently undergone an emergency operation and although Elena had her news article all planned, she apologises for not having put pen to paper yet. But she simply hasn't been able to find time to write, what with running the feeding station for the children in her area and all that's involved in helping her husband who is now at home to recuperate.

I am sure your prayers in this matter will be much appreciated by Elena and we would like to thank Tammy for keeping us informed.

The 'Seeway Trust Ukraine'  (background information)

Seeway Trust has been working in Ukraine since 2001, predominantly feeding children.

Because of poverty, unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse, sadly the children here suffer greatly.

We formed the 'Seeway Trust Ukraine' - which is a non governmental organisation (NGO) based in the Ukraine, to enable us to feed and look after these children far more effectively.

Seeway are currently involved here with two feeding programmes.

Pastor Lena is based near Zhitomir, approximately 100 miles from Kiev, the Ukrainian capitol.

She Pastors a church and oversees a feeding programme for local children. There are 25 children who are given one good nourishing meal, five days a week. This food will make a big difference to their lives. In the winter they are also given vitamin tablets that help to keep out the cold, which on occasions reaches 20 degrees below freezing.

Pastor Lena has introduced Seeway Trust to Pastor Sveta who has a similar feeding programme in a village between Zhitomir and Kiev where a number of children are given food which will help to keep them from starving.

A brief history of why Seeway are working
at the Zhitomir area in the Ukraine.

Seeway Trust became involved with feeding children in the Ukraine several years ago. We are currently working in the city of Zhitomir which is situated about 100 miles from the Chernobyl disaster. Ukraine became a state independent of Russian communism about 15 years ago.

In some ways when it was a communist state it was of great benefit to the people of the Ukraine. All were able to work, which gave them regular food and the basic needs of life, even if life was hard. Since that time, many are now unemployed, alcoholism and drug abuse among the male population is very high, which in turn causes problems with family breakup.

The effects of the Chernobyl explosion on Zhitomir remain high, it is estimated that out of the population of 350,000 people, 17,000 children and young people are still suffering the effects to some degree. Coupled with the poverty in this area, there is a very great need.

DID YOU KNOW - 35 thousand children under the age of 5
die every day, - just through malnutrition?
