Kazakhstan (background information)

Cildren in the homeWe became involved in a state orphanage in Kazakhstan; 'Disabled Children’s Orphanage no 3' in Almaty.

It is the home to 160 physically and mentally handicapped children. Because of low staffing levels the children have had no help with their physical needs, many of them have to be shown the very basics such as how to walk.

Larisa encouraging children Larisa a physical education teacher with some physiotherapy training needed finance to enable her to spend 3 days a week with these children and to purchase the basic gym equipment. The Seeway Trust raised the money to pay Larisa’s initial wages for 12 months and to equip the gym.

A local group visit and entertain the childrenAfter having received Larisa's second report on the children since she has been working at Almaty, I am pleased to be able to say that very many, have been making encouraging progress.

Sadly not all of the children receiving help are progressing. Some of the older children (early teens), who are in a severely handicapped condition, appear to have little physical change, but their emotional state seems to have improved which is great news.

Children caged for their own safety! Some of the greatest improvements appear to be with the much younger and infant groups, which really is heartening.

We are extremely grateful to those who already generously sponsor children in the care of Seeway Trust homes, those who have become partners with us and those who have helped with gifts of finance for the work of the Trust. But if you feel that you can help, we are still looking for more aid.

 Have you ever felt
really helpless?

Pictures: VERY TOP RIGHT - Disabled and bored, young wheelchair bound children at the Almaty Orphanage. TOP LEFT - Larisa encouraging three youngsters. MIDDLE RIGHT - A local band of musicians drop in occasionally to brighten up the childrens day. MIDDLE LEFT - Sadly some of the more severe cases have to be caged for their own protection. BOTTOM LEFT - Larisa exercising one of the younger children on the wallbars.

Recently a visit was made to check that everything is running as smoothly as we had hoped, obviously we have only presented a small portion of the news and pictures here for you. But If you would like more information on the Seeway Trust or our projects, please do not hesitate to contact us.

After many years of great work at the home, Larisa moved with her family to Canada, but the work she started with the children in the home continues with Ganna - a physical education teacher, who we are pleased to report is having much success.
